Year: 2019

Location: Moscow

Status: concept

Client: cultural center ZIL

The ZIL Cultural Center has undergone several alterations since its construction. The building has absorbed several cultural layers of various eras. On top of the original avant-garde architecture, we witnessed both classical finery and Soviet modernism, which survived to our days. It’s not to mention that the complex of the cultural center itself is located in the middle of the old monastery. The rich history of the architecture of the ZIL cultural complex can be supplemented by fine plasty of the new ceiling. After the avant-garde and Soviet modernism, elements of modern artistic techniques, such as computational design, are quite appropriate for these interiors. A special algorithm developed for installation in the ZIL cultural center is designed to demonstrate the next stages of design evolution.

Is it possible to pass a certain kind of decorative art through a reduction filter? Fortunately, modern software can help us. There is a certain logic under any manmade pattern that can be recognized.

The ideas of Avant-garde reinterpreted the entire previous architectural heritage through simplification and reduction. Architects removed the decor from the facades and began to operate only with the essentials that remained - windows, doors, an array of walls. What will happen if we turn the same trick on some russian folk decorative art? Is it possible to pass a certain kind of decorative art called Gzhel through a reduction filter? Fortunately, modern software can help us. There is a certain logic under any manmade pattern that can be recognized. In particular, a feature of Gzhel or Khokhloma is that the space is evenly filled with a frame of the teardrop-shaped lines, on top of which decorative elements are strung. This project proves that the frame itself is a piece of art.
